Zhang Xianzhong came from a poor family. From a young age, he was intelligent and stubborn, following his father in small businesses, selling red dates. He had served as a constable, and later became a frontier soldier in Yansui Town. He was naturally fierce and righteous, often standing up against injustice, which almost cost him his life. During the Chongzhen reign, he organized a peasant army uprising and, in 1640, led his forces into Sichuan. In 1644, he established the Great Xi regime in Chengdu, ascended the throne, and adopted the reign title Dashun. In 1646, as the Qing army advanced southward, Zhang Xianzhong led his troops to resist and was killed by a stray arrow at Fenghuang Mountain in Xichong.
